Founded in 1879, Paint Rock is the present seat of Concho County.
Named for the extensive Indian pictographs painted on limestone cliffs bordering
the Concho River. It is a center for ranching and agriculture.
Paint Rock Excursions-
Guided tours are available to a site where the earliest paintings date from
prehistoric times; succeeding pictographs continued until the last quarter of the
19th century when Comanche Indians still hunted in the area. Weekend tours include a
boat ride down the Concho river where visitors often see deer, wild turkey and other
native wildlife along with approximately 1500 markings. Weekday tours travel to the
site in cars. Open Jun - Aug, Mon - Sat 9am - noon, Sun noon - 5pm. Other
